Bike on the Coronado Bridge

2010 Bike the Bay

Posted on August 29, 2010 by Phil.

On Sunday, Aug. 29th 2010, hundreds of cyclists met and finished at the Embarcadero Marine Park South near the San Diego Convention Center to take a once in a lifetime opportunity to ride your bike over Coronado Bridge. The 25 mile ride started a 7am and the small group I was with signed up weeks in advance to take part in this special event that happens every year. It's important to know that the event is a ride and not a race. Since it's a ride, it really sets the tone for good conversation and a few laughs with friends that lead to a very enjoyable sunday morning.
One of priviledges of taking part in the ride, or challenge depending on how you look at it, is the ride over Coronado Bridge. After a quick pass through Chicano Park everyone faces the steep entrance onto Coronado Bridge where things can get a little tough as seen by some of the riders deciding to walk their bike up the hill. Once you reach the 90 degree turn in the bridge, the views of the Coronado Shores, all of the Coronado real estate including the Coronado Cays are absolutely magnificent. We continued our ride on Glorietta Boulevard and traveled the length of the Silver Strand past the Coronado Cays to the most southern part of San Diego Bay. For the most part, the course is flat and caters to bikers of all levels. Once the race is finished, the vendors sponsoring the race have food and snacks waiting for everyone to enjoy. So, if you own a bike and weren't able to join us this year be sure to check out www.bikethebay.net for next year's race to enjoy the unforgetable views and a great cycling experience.
